Mortlach’s history

Collection

Mortlach came to life in 1904, when the Canadian Pacific Railway's new line became operational. The village grew up on land first homesteaded in 1902 by Khamis Michael, a native of what is now Iraq. The name is generally believed to have been given by George Stephen, the CPR's first president, who chose it for his home parish of Mortlach, Scotland. Parkbeg, Caron and Craigellachie, site of the 'Last Spike', share that same origin.
